Barn Conversion

Domestic

Adaptive reuse

Lancashire.

A conversion of a barn in the rolling hills of Lancashire resulting in a sympathetic approach to the exterior and an open plan interior with a fresh airy character.

Construction is now complete on the refurbishment of this stone-built barn in a rural area of Lancashire. The building had previously been converted into a single-family dwelling on the first floor and there were plans to turn the downstairs into apartments but this was never fully completed.

The project will see the upgrade of the fabric to the latest standards of insulation and the creation of large triple-glazed openings on the southern elevation. The environmental strategy includes the provision of a biomass boiler and a large amount of photovoltaic panels on the south-facing roof slope.

Internally the layout will be completely altered to accommodate the living spaces on the ground floor whilst the sleeping quarters will be on the first floor. The external areas will be completely redesigned to incorporate hard landscaping and stone-built planters.
