Huge Architects have recently been working on the design for this newbuild housing scheme in Walton Vale on the site of the former Aintree Institute which was demolished in 2006. The proposal takes its clues from the adjoining Victorian terrace, the nearby Black Bull Inn and the design of the previously demolished Aintree Institute building which used to front Longmoor Lane with a series of gables.
The massing of the scheme seeks to articulate three interconnected volumes, all of which share the common feature of the shallow pitch roof. The metal-clad top storey is set back from the red brick facade below and is conceived to read as an element of the roofscape. The window proportions and general composition of the front elevation borrow their principles from those of the adjacent terrace with the amount of glazing progressively decreasing towards the top of the building whilst the most prominent corner of the scheme is aimed to echo the group of windows on the gabled projections of the Black Bull Inn.
